Ernest Hemingway, the author who gave us classics such as “The Old Man and the Sea” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, is well known for his simple and direct writing style. Although many critics did not like his style, it is a style that is bold and easy to read.
This has inspired the creation of the Web App “Hemingway.” The app scans your writing for the use of adverbs, passive voice, readability, and simplicity to give you a score. This score reflects the lowest grade level that could understand your writing. The app also highlights your text in areas that could improve and gives you suggestion on how to make it easier to read.
Before you start using this instead of the The Writing Center, let me just say that it is not perfect. Even some of Hemingway’s own writing does not get a good grade. It is just a fun app to see how concise your writing is. I used it to write this blog post and I am proud to say that this post scores an eight, a score that reflects “bold, clear writing.”
You can check out the Web App here. It is also available for download as a Desktop App.
