Three examples:

I asked him to look into buying beacons, a short range broadcasting device, for the CIS Sandbox. Later that day I got a full report comparing three different brands and the benefits of each, along with his recommendation. Of course I bought what he suggested!

When I said, , “We need to figure out how to set up Google home”, a personal assistant device we bought recently. “I already did, stop by and I’ll give you a demo of what we’re going to show with it at our open house.”

“Do you think we should get some virtual reality equipment”, I aksed. “Really?” he said, He came back with some recommendations, one of which included not buying the specialized computer that is required , but rather, building it from scratch.

A couple of weeks ago, we created a video about Learning in the CIS Sandbox as part of Europe’s Open Education Week, and I asked Mike to participate. I asked Mike to talk about things he learned from his experience as a tutor in the CIS Sandbox. Here’s what he said:

“Through tutoring here at the CIS Sandbox, we help students with their assignments and any difficulties they may have with their classes. As tutors we also learn about ourselves. Through being a tutor I’ve learned to overcome certain difficulties in life as well as learning about the technological advances that life has brought us in recent years.”

These remarks reach far beyond Mike’s experience as a tutor in the CIS Sandbox. They provide insight into Mike’s personality, and teach how all of us can live thoughtfully and responsibly in the world: Be helpful to others, deal with life’s challenges as they arise as best you can, and enjoy the fullness that life brings.

The CIS Department awarded Mike Augello with the 2017 James H.
